Winds of Hope Benefit Concert - March 11th - Benaroya Hall
Japanese school bands are regarded as among the finest in the world and the thought that many children may not be able to participate in their bands at this time is heart-wrenching. For that reason we will be presenting a concert in Benaroya Hall, home of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, on the one-year anniversary of the disaster, March 11th, 2012. Legendary jazz pianist/composer Toshiko Akiyoshi, tenor sax/flute master Lew Tabackin, trumpet star Eric Miyashiro, Seattle Symphony principal trombonist Ko-Ichiro Yamamoto, the University of Washington Wind Ensemble and and many local jazz artists will be combining forces for the concert and it is our sincere hope that a great deal of money will be raised to send to Japan for purposes of assisting the affected schools in the reconstruction of their band programs through the purchase of new instruments.

Recital on This Sunday Jan 29th
This Sunday, January 29, Edmonds-Woodway Music Department is holding it's annual Ensemble/Chamber Music Recital.  Only the ensembles and chamber groups will be playing.  Unfortunately there won't be time to hear the student solos as there are just too many students registered!

The recital will be in the EWHS Little Theater. Groups have been instructed to sign-up for one of  three sessions which include either the 1:30, 3:00 or 4:30 time slots.  Groups will play for their peers and will receive feedback.  Each session should last about 60-75 minutes. Performers and audience will be expected to stay and supportively listen to all of the ensembles during their session (but not all three sessions). We would love to have parents and family join us for this free event.

Students should dress up in formal attire but are not required to wear their band, choir or orchestra uniform. The band room will be opened around 12:30pm if you’d like to meet in advance and warm-up. Please contact your teacher if you have any questions.

Solo/Ensemble on Saturday Feb 4th
The Solo/Ensemble contest will be held at the Lynnwood High School on Saturday February 4th. This is an all day adjudicated event - but students only need to be there a half an hour or more before their performance time to warm up and check the schedule; their teacher will let them know when to arrive. To find times, check the schedule below; looking under the name of the teacher for your student's time and room location.

Thank you to Wendy Burson and to all of the parents who helped to make our Craft Fair on Saturday such a success! The room looked wonderful and everyone seemed to have a great time. A very big thank you to the band, orchestra, and choir for playing/singing on Saturday for the craft goers - and being there to set-up early in the morning and tear-down in the evening!

Choir Schedule for December
Tuesday Dec 6 - Morning rehearsal with Jazz I on “I Can’t Believe”.  Meet in choir room first. Bel Canto Concert call time at 6:45pm in the band room.  We’ll be singing Carol of the Bells if any non-Canto people want to come sing.
Thursday Dec 8 - AM set up sound system in the theater.  Bring your concert attire and change during advisory- or even better wear it to school and look snazzy.  During 4th period we’ll be performing in the theater.  Wind Symphony will go first then we’ll sing a few Christmas tunes while they reset the stage behind the curtain.  Then we’ll sing “Agua” and “I Can’t Believe”.  After our performance you’ll be free to go back to your 4th period class. Since everything will already be set up for that night the jazz night call time will be 6:45pm.
Friday Dec 9th - Mello-Aires pictures during second period- bring your outfit.  If you’re not in Bel Canto I’ll let you know soon if it will be at the beginning of the period or at the end.  Possible evening performance at Brighton Court

We will stay in the Spokane Ramada Inn in Spokane. The cost is $160 per student  with checks made out to 'ESD' and submitted to Mrs. Daines.  Families experiencing financial hardships may submit an application for assistance through the Music Booster Club.

We will need a number of chaperones. Chaperones pay their own way at a reduced rate ($100 per person). We need parent chaperones who will drive their own vehicles to provide additional space for hauling instruments and for ferrying small groups of students to their performance venues on Friday & Saturday.  If you are interested in chaperoning this trip, please send Mr. Bergevin an email ASAP!

Jazz I & II trip to Eastern Washington University's Jazz Dialog
We are planning a big jazz field trip for Friday through Sunday, January 13-15. We will depart from school by charter bus at 6:30 am on Friday, January 13th, and return to EW on Sunday, January 15.

Music Supports the EW's Canned Food Drive!
Edmonds Food Bank serves between 300-400 families in Edmonds per week.  EW's food drive is the most important food drive in our entire district as it needs approximately 3000-4000 cans per week to provide for our area.  So far, our food drive has brought in under 200 cans.  We are asking for your help!  Please help us spread the word. We are extending the food drive into the first week of December in an effort to bring in more cans!
Thanks for your support!   Becky Heckinger (Kern) / Biology Teacher

Marching Band Will Not be Going to the Macy's Parade -Mr. Bergevin
The Marching Band will not be playing in the Macy's Parade this year on the day after Thanksgiving.  Although it was not included in the back to school calendar, I know we have discussed it and families are unclear whether or not we were going to play. Please plan to enjoy your holiday free of band events. Given that the football team continues into playoffs, I'd like our focus in class to be on the upcoming December 13th concert (and jazz night Dec 8).  Parade takes some energy and is directly in the middle of a 5 day weekend.  For the past 2 years the event hasn't been televised and last year there was no adjudication panel either.  Drumline and drill team will still participate if we can get adequate parent volunteers and transportation.
I look forward to participating next year.  Please send questions or concerns my way.

Music Advocacy - Edmonds School Board Elections
Wanting to be as informed as possible in casting votes for new ESD school board members, Deb Anderson emailed to two candidates who are running against each other three questions.  The other two candidates are running unopposed.  These questions were provided as a resource by the National Music Educators Association.
1.  What is your general position on music education?
2.  How do you feel about a music requirement for high school graduation?
3.  Did you have any experiences with music education or other arts education?  If so, did those experiences affect you?

Glee Video Information = EWHS's Video

This comes from Tony Welch, one of our music parents:

  • I went through ALL the schools in our region.  EW is currently at 17 or 18th for most votes!  This is great news but we have to be in the top 15 in our region for the contest.  I've noticed that the voting is not as strong for most of the schools in the top 20 schools in our region.  So, if we push really hard till Nov. 7th I think it would be really easy to get EW in the top 15!
  • If everyone voting clicks on "share" and then sends them out on their social media sites to their friends, like Facebook, we should be able to pull it off.  I've also emailed the link to friends and family on my personal email distribution list.
  • We are down to the wire and it would be great if an email was sent out everyday as a reminder to vote and encouraging them to send the link to friends, family and coworkers.

Lost Clarinet – Please Check Your Clarinet!

Kailee Hanke’s clarinet was switched with someone else’s last week.  It is only a couple of years old, and has gold lettering on it with a fabric case and the zipper pull was missing on it. The side pocket had a box of Rico Reeds in it either size 3 or 3 1/2. Kailee’s clarinet was on top of a Bari-Sax case in the back of the locker room. The clarinet that was left in its place had no brand name on it.  If you know what happened to this clarinet or notice that you have accidently brought it home, please contact Kailee or Mr. Bergevin.
