Winds of Hope Benefit Concert - March 11th - Benaroya Hall
Japanese school bands are regarded as among the finest in the world and the thought that many children may not be able to participate in their bands at this time is heart-wrenching. For that reason we will be presenting a concert in Benaroya Hall, home of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, on the one-year anniversary of the disaster, March 11th, 2012. Legendary jazz pianist/composer Toshiko Akiyoshi, tenor sax/flute master Lew Tabackin, trumpet star Eric Miyashiro, Seattle Symphony principal trombonist Ko-Ichiro Yamamoto, the University of Washington Wind Ensemble and and many local jazz artists will be combining forces for the concert and it is our sincere hope that a great deal of money will be raised to send to Japan for purposes of assisting the affected schools in the reconstruction of their band programs through the purchase of new instruments.

EWHS Music Email for the Week of January 23rd

Recital on This Sunday Jan 29th
This Sunday, January 29, Edmonds-Woodway Music Department is holding it's annual Ensemble/Chamber Music Recital.  Only the ensembles and chamber groups will be playing.  Unfortunately there won't be time to hear the student solos as there are just too many students registered!

The recital will be in the EWHS Little Theater. Groups have been instructed to sign-up for one of  three sessions which include either the 1:30, 3:00 or 4:30 time slots.  Groups will play for their peers and will receive feedback.  Each session should last about 60-75 minutes. Performers and audience will be expected to stay and supportively listen to all of the ensembles during their session (but not all three sessions). We would love to have parents and family join us for this free event.

Students should dress up in formal attire but are not required to wear their band, choir or orchestra uniform. The band room will be opened around 12:30pm if you’d like to meet in advance and warm-up. Please contact your teacher if you have any questions.

Solo/Ensemble on Saturday Feb 4th
The Solo/Ensemble contest will be held at the Lynnwood High School on Saturday February 4th. This is an all day adjudicated event - but students only need to be there a half an hour or more before their performance time to warm up and check the schedule; their teacher will let them know when to arrive. To find times, check the schedule below; looking under the name of the teacher for your student's time and room location.

Music Supports the EW's Canned Food Drive!
Edmonds Food Bank serves between 300-400 families in Edmonds per week.  EW's food drive is the most important food drive in our entire district as it needs approximately 3000-4000 cans per week to provide for our area.  So far, our food drive has brought in under 200 cans.  We are asking for your help!  Please help us spread the word. We are extending the food drive into the first week of December in an effort to bring in more cans!

Marching Band Will Not be Going to the Macy's Parade -Mr. Bergevin
The Marching Band will not be playing in the Macy's Parade this year on the day after Thanksgiving.  Although it was not included in the back to school calendar, I know we have discussed it and families are unclear whether or not we were going to play. Please plan to enjoy your holiday free of band events. Given that the football team continues into playoffs, I'd like our focus in class to be on the upcoming December 13th concert (and jazz night Dec 8).  Parade takes some energy and is directly in the middle of a 5 day weekend.  For the past 2 years the event hasn't been televised and last year there was no adjudication panel either.  Drumline and drill team will still participate if we can get adequate parent volunteers and transportation.
I look forward to participating next year.  Please send questions or concerns my way.
